Samsung Electro-Mechanics

The world leading player in mechatronics,

2009.08.21(금) | CNnews (이메일주소:chungnamdo@korea.kr; chungnamdo@korea.kr)

Since its foundation in 1973, Samsung Electron-Mechanics had manufactured core electronic parts for AV focusing on the TV sector in the early stages before diversifying its business to include high-tech parts of PCs and cellular phones in the 1980s and 1990s and setting the foundation for the technological independence of Korea’s electronic parts industry by developing promising new generational products.
Under the slogan of “Into the Future,” it has further advanced the old IT-based business structure, expanded its business into future sectors including energy and environment, and solidified its vision, “Creating the future - the world’s leading parts company,” in order to become the “world’s best expert on parts” in the rapidly changing business environment.

Three major core technologies and high-tech products
Materials technology
The technology usually involves the products that are the basis of appliances. We manufacture HDI (High Density Interconnection) boards, which transmit the electric signals in appliances, PKG (Package Substrate) boards, which are to be mounted on semiconductors and require delicate circuit correspondence, and the vibration motors for MLCC, which regulates the electricity flow in appliances by laminating dielectric substance and electrodes, mobile phones and game devices.

RF (radio frequency) technology
The RF technology is associated with those products that enable high frequency communication such as data transmission and reception on portable devices as well as digital broadcasting whose demands have recently surged. Our products in this technology group include the digital turner/DMB turner used in digital TVs, mobile RF/network module used as a module for wireless communication with portable devices, and the Power, which usually delivers power to LCD TVs.

Optical technology
The optical technology is applied to products that deal with light, closely related to everyday life. We produce the ISM (Image Sensor Module), which is a camera module to allow a mobile phone to take all kinds of pictures and record videos, and the LED (Light Emitting Diode), which has been emerging as a new technology to replace the conventional lighting apparatus.

The status of Samsung Electro-Mechanics home and abroad
Maintaining the No. 1 place in Korea parts industry, Samsung Electron-Mechanics is the only non-Japanese company on the list of the world top 10 parts companies. Its management and employees are determined to meet its major goals, which include recording sales of 5.6 trillion won and becoming one of the top 3 players in the global market by 2010.
Another focus of the company is the operation of its global bases. It received the Best Corporation Award in the Philippines in April this year. By producing and marketing a variety of new high-tech products such as the MLCC with the world largest capacity, the world thinnest camera module, and the world smallest SAW duplexer, it has made a contribution to promoting Korea technological power worldwide. It has also specialized its business in its base areas (R&D in South Korea, combined complexes in China, RF complexes in Thailand, and chip parts complexes in the Philippines) and reinforced its global management through local-based services around eight production bases home and abroad and 30 sales bases around the world.

Harmony management between labor and management and activities to support production
The company provides support to the various club activities and welfare benefits for the management and employees in order to turn itself into “a workplace that you want to work for.” It has also maintained efficient partnerships with medium- and small-sized partner companies home and abroad through the mutual survival program. And its devotion to social contributions has reached a wide range of communities and groups; its annual support program includes financing artificial joint surgeries for low-income individuals with joint disability, providing meals to institutions for the disabled, and promoting mutual survival and cooperation between the company and the country.

Introduction of the Boards Department at the Daejeon establishment
Located in Yeongi-gun, Chungcheongnam Province, the Daejeon establishment of Samsung Electron-Mechanics opened 1991 and currently holds the Boards Department that produces printed circuit boards, the most important part of the company. Claiming 45,000 pyeong of lot area and 24,000 pyeong of total floor space, the establishment is the workplace for about 2,000 management members and employees. Its annual sales of printed circuit boards record 1.3 trillion won, which makes the establishment the leading player in the global boards market.

Main products
The Daejeon establishment manufactures boards for semiconductor packages, the PBGA (Plastic Ball Grid Array) boards usually used for computers, the ultra-slim CSP (CHIP Scale Package) boards that are 100㎛ in thickness and mounted on mobile devices, the high-tech FCCSP (Flip-Chip CSP) boards, and recently the buried pattern boards and embedded boards where various kinds of passive and active devices are integrated.

Diverse services for the community
The Daejeon establishment runs 33 volunteer teams designed to do volunteer activities for the community. It set up sisterhood relationships with the “Geumsagamagol” of Geumsa-ri, Yeongi-gun and the “Daeyado” of Taean-gun and has played a leading role in promoting exchanges between the urban and rural areas. It holds an annual event on the Day of the Disabled in Yeongi-gun and has held more than one consolatory function for foreign workers in the area. In addition, it is beginning a campaign of Neighborly Love to be held every December.
