Preparations to Become a Global Steel Company
Hyundai Steel was founded as Korea’s first still mill in 1953, since when it has built three plants in Incheon, Pohang, and Dangjin and developed the world’s best portfolio including a wide array of products like bar-shaped steel, sheet steel, cast steel, and rolling steel. Despite the lack of transparency in the global economy, it has engaged in constant developments of new technologies and products and active sales activities and recorded more than 10 trillion won in sales in 2008.

Main Products
Reinforcing rods are used for reinforced concrete structures, nuclear power plants and general construction.
H-shaped steel is used for high strength H-shaped steel, H-shaped rolling steel for construction, and high-rise buildings.
Rail products are for high speed railways as well as general ones.
Section steel for ships are used to make the deck and hull of large ships for its high tension and welding quality.
Hot-rolled steel sheets are used in many different fields including automobile, electronics, high pressure gas containers, and oil pipelines.
Stainless cold-rolled steel sheets are also used in a wide range of products including industrial tanks, chemical processing devices, internal and external building materials, kitchen utensils, electronics, and so on.
Rolls boast world-class quality including all kinds of rolls such as the latest centrifugal-cast rolls.

The Dangjin Plant is a Model of Environment-Friendly Steel Mills
Hyundai Steel’s plant in Dangjin runs a closed material system, which made the plant the world’s leading environment-friendly steel mill. The world’s first ever, the closed material management system keeps such materials as iron ore and bituminous coal indoors and operates unloading equipments and conveyor belts in a closed loop. As a result, the materials are never exposed outside from shipping to production, which solved the problem with arsenic acid dust emitting from the steel mill. A staff member from the company explained, “In the past, steel mills stored iron ore and bituminous coal out in the yard. The fine dust deriving from them contaminated the surrounding areas and caused environmental problems. We at Hyundai Steel run a closed system for storing and moving materials and thus successfully prevent such problems.”

The Closed Circular Storage House

The dome roof at the top of the storage house of the materials is 130m in diameter and 65m in height. Its size equals that of a baseball field. When working together, the storage houses No. 3 and 4 can store 45 days worth materials including 1,900,000 tons of iron ore, 800,000 tons of coal, and 250,000 tons of auxiliary materials. The facility makes the plant an environment-friendly steel mill. In addition, it records higher efficiency of material storage than the old open system and is bound by no operational limitations according to weather conditions, which means a cut in material management costs.

Dangjin of Chungnam Emerges as the Mecca of the Global Steel Industry
Hyundai Steel is building an integrated environment-friendly steel mill in Dangjin, Chungnam with a investment of 5.800 trillion won. Once it starts its operation in 2010, the steel mill will invite about 70,000 new people to the population and move the area’s industrial structure toward high-profit manufacturing and service. As a result, the city will have a foundation to become a leading one with its growth potential.
Based on its reliability from 50 years of high quality products and service, Hyundai Steel will make investments for sustainable growth by building a clean steel mill of the latest facilities and technologies and engage in advanced environmental management.
