Sunrise and Sunset“At a glance”

2013.01.18(금) 17:05:59 | CNnews (이메일주소:chungnamdo@korea.kr; chungnamdo@korea.kr)

The sight of sunrise and sunset gives special meaning to each and everyone. This is why people look to the sun on the last day of the year or on the new year’s day in order to reflect upon the time passed by or to make a wish or reestablish determination. If the East Coast is famous for sunrise, then the West Coast has special sites where one can see both sunrise and sunset. If the East Coast’s sunrise has strong masculinity, sunrise in the West Coast is soft and sentimental. Here, we introduce must-visit places in the West Coast where you can enjoy the beauty of sunrise and sunset at a single site.

Sunrise and Sunset at the Same Site
Waemok Village, Dangjin.

Waemok village in Dangjin is special in that you can look at sunrise and sunset at the same site. Despite the fact that it is situated in the West Coast, you can see the rise of the sun because of this village’s geographical characteristic which is sticks out to the east. At the moment of sunrise, the sea in front of Waemok village turns golden brown. Setting sun can be appreciated near Bikyoun-do, which is on the southern part of Daenanji-do and Sonanji-do, while rising sun can be seen between Yongmuchi of Jango port and Kukhwa-do.

Only in the winter
Sunrise of Maryang port, Seocheon.

Marayng port is a mysterious place where you can only see the sunrise in the winter. At Dongbaekjung of Marayang port, you can see the glow of setting sun, and at the dock, you can see the sunrise. Nearby, there are also Chungjangdae beach, Hongwon harbor, Busa breakwater, Keumkang river mouth which is famous as habitat for migratory birds, and Hansan Ramic Fabric Town that you can look around.

Sunset over Buddhist temple
Cheonsooman Bay Ganwolam

A small island Ganwoldo is situated in Chensooman Bay, Busuk-myun, Seosan-si, Chungnam. In Ganwoldo, there is a small buddhist temple called Ganwolam. Ganwol means “to see the moonlight” and this temple was named when Muhakdaesa, a monk during the Joseon dynasty, saw the moonlight here and found the truth. During flood tide, the water fills the seabed so it becomes an island and during low tide, this temple is linked to the land. If you stand in front of Daeungjeon, the sight of the open sea in front of your eyes and the fishing boats that go across the waves looks like a painting. In winter, around 5 o’clock in the evening, you can enjoy the beauty of the sunset.
