Enchanted by Massive Flights of Migratory Birds in Cheonsuman Bay

2013.01.18(금) 16:57:28 | CNnews (이메일주소:chungnamdo@korea.kr; chungnamdo@korea.kr)

Wild geese stalk around the empty fields to eat fallen grains after the fall harvest. They take off en masse, immediately line up in a V-shaped flight formation and fly toward the rising sun over the horizon after making a short circuit over the Cheonsuman Bay.

Migratory birds including wild geese converge on the bay this season. From mid October, hundreds and thousands of birds including mallards, spot-billed ducks, gadwalls, whooper swans and Chinese geese start to migrate to the Cheonsuman Bay for the winter, fleeing from the severe cold spell in Siberia.
As the name ‘Cheonsuman’ (meaning a bay in a shallow sea) goes, the bay is so rich in water plants and rocks that it has been a great spawning ground for fish for a long time, which, as a result, provides abundant food resources for migratory birds. Since the reclamation was completed in 1984, the reclaimed land composed of District A surrounding the Ganwolho Lake and District B surrounding the Bunamho Lake has emerged as an excellent habitat for migratory birds.

The bird watching tour starts off at the Bird Land in the hill of Chang-ri in Buseok-myeon of Seosan City where the whole scenery of Cheonsuman comes in sight. Visitors first take a look around the Migratory Birds Museum where taxidermy birds are displayed and watch a 4D film featuring geese flights in a pyramid-shaped theater. And then, they finally take a tour bus bound for District A for bird watching.
The 30km-long exploration path along the Ganwolho Lake is worth to be called the “showroom of migratory birds.” Relatively big birds like white herons and common herons hunt for fish among small spectacled teals and hooded cranes with their elegant appearance boastfully fly over the lake, catching people’s eyes. As the sun declines to the west and the moon rises from the east, hundreds and thousands of birds take off en masse to spend the night in their nests. This creates spectacular views, making bird watchers exclaim in awe. The beautiful scenery at sunset is acclaimed as one of the greatest ecological spectacles, drawing attention of the world.
