Chungcheongnam-do hosts an international debate to share trends in anti-coal policies and discuss the direction for the realization of eco-friendly energy transition.

The province revealed that it will host “2017 International Conference on Coal Phase-out and Energy Transition” together with Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Ministry of Environment from the 24th to 26th at Resom Castle in Deoksan, Yesan.

Amidst the global expansion of coal phase-out policies with the new climate system coming up in 2020, this conference has been set up to investigate cases in which foreign local governments established and promoted policies to close down coal-fired thermal power plants, to share alternatives and policy experiences and to build up an international network.

Also, it contributed to the expansion of a nationwide consensus on the reduction of fossil fuels before the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change general meeting held in Germany.

Under the subject of “Coal phase-out and eco-friendly energy transition policies under the new climate system,” the conference, which was hosted by the Chungnam Institute, invited about 400 domestic and international energy experts and public officials.

On the 24th, the first day of the conference, the participants visited Dangjin and attended conversations with key personnel and a welcoming event, etc. The second day, the 25th, proceeded with an opening ceremony, presentation of policies and case studies and a comprehensive debate.

During the opening ceremony, Governor An Heejung gave a special speech with the topic of “Coal phase-out transition in the new climate system”, which was followed by a keynote speech by B?rbel H?hn, a former member of the German Bundestag, on “Trends in global energy transition, Germany’s experiences and proposal for Korea”.

The first session after the opening ceremony, under the subject of “Trends in the financial investment of eco-friendly energy transition and cases of conversion of power generation companies,” featured presentations on “Global coal phase-out trends and financial investments” and “Anti-coal experiences of power generation companies and its implications.”
