2010 Great Baekje World Festival

We hold a cultural festival on the theme of 700 years of history of Baekje, an ancient kingdom 1,400 years ago.

Great Baekje, the shining light of cultural exchanges in the ancient East Asia.

The Gentle, Subtle, Serene Culture of Baekje,

The Great Cultural Baekje played an important role in promoting cultural exchanges in East Asia with its creativity and global mindset.

Having lain dormant for many centuries, Great Baekje will be brought to life with the completion of the Baekje Cultural Land in Chungcheongnam-do, where Baekje� descendants reside.

We invite you to this new world!

2010 Great Baekje World Festival

The aquatic performances at Geumgang and Baekmagang Rivers as the epic festival of Great Baekje

The 700-year history and spirit of Great Baekje will be revived in our hearts at the 2010 Great Baekje World Festival. The culture of Great Baekje, which thrived 1,400 years ago, is now revived in the world renowned 2010 Great Baekje World Festival, with the participation of 20 historic cities around the world which had cultural exchange with Baekje. We prepare to hold the 2010 Great Baekje World Festival with the endeavoring efforts of two million citizens of Chungnam.

Official Name : 2010 Great Baekje World Festival

Venue : Buyeo County and Gongju City, Chungnam Province

Period : September 18 ~ October 17, 2010 (30 days) / Opening Ceremony: September 17, 2010 (Baekje Cultural Land)

Participant Countries : Over 20 member cities of the League of Historical Cities

Visitors : 2.6 million (0.2 million foreigners)

The splendid culture of Baekje is presented in the form of a spectacular, modern dramatic interpretation of the epic stories of Baekje.

Regarded as the best aquatic performance of Korea being created by 200 professional actors, it combines the natural landscape of the Baekmagang River with the special effects of media art.

Aquatic Performance at Gomanaru Ferry “The Tale of Sama”

The tale of Sama is a performance about King Muryeong who has achieved strong marine relationship with other countries and expanded its territory. The performance will be presented through special effects, large-scale group dancing, and 7-layer stage by beautifully expressing the time and space of past and future with the beautiful Geumgang River in the background.

Travel to Baekje Palace A Day at Sabigung Palace

Visitors can personally experience the daily life of Baekje people and the lifestyle of the royal court at Baekje Palace, which enjoyed its heyday 1,400 years ago.

Visitors will be able to watch a Reenactment of King Sung declaration of capital transfer to Sabi during the Baekje Dynasty, the wedding ceremony of King Mu and Princess Seonhwa, and a procession of people moving to the new capital, Sabi. Visitors can also participate in the events through experience programs. In particular, participatory programs are designed to teach children the principles of filial duty and friendship through the story of King Uija and the story of a dutiful son, Joseok, while adults will be able to look at historical events related to King Uija from a new perspective.

The performances will shed new light on the Baekje Dynasty, a strong early Korean state which engaged actively in foreign relations after moving its capital to Sabi. Visitors will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the grand spirit of Baekje as they reflect on its history.

Experience Space Where Visitors Can Communicate with Baekje,

A Day at Ungjinseong Fortress

Visitors will be able to enjoy the sound of beautiful scenery and a performance by five musicians of Baekje, the face of Baekje, and a beautiful pond of Baekje. Visitors can also admire a 6-meter-long ring-pommel sword created by flowers. It is a space where visitors can communicate with Baekje as they experience the 700-year-old Great Baekje. Baekje Village offers various Baekje costume and agricultural experiences, and operates a digital history experience hall.

The vigorous spirit of the Baekje people is expressed through the Reenactment of Enroute to war ceremony of General Gyebaek and Reenactment of the battle of Hwangsanbeol involving 123 horses and 100 soldiers. Visitors will enjoy Korea first and the largest cavalcade and Baekje dynamic traditional martial art as performed by horse soldiers.

Reenactment of the Battle of Hwangsanbeol

The Battle of Hwangsanbeol, in which a do-or-die squad of Baekje soldiers and General Gyebaek fought against 50,000 troops of the Silla Dynasty, will be re-enacted with 30 horses and 1,000 professional actors using ancient weapons in front of spectators.

Great Baekje Exchange Parade

Parade of foreign envoys from the countries in cultural exchange with Baekje will be reenacted with parades of traditional model ships and animal characters. The distinctive cultures and traditional performances of six countries (China, Japan, the Philippines, India, Vietnam and Cambodia) which engaged in exchanges with Baekje will be presented.

Parade, Performance and Exhibition of Baekje Masks

The ‘Mimaji Instrumental Music Mask’, which Mimaji, Baekje citizen, taught to Japan, is a spectacular performance that will unite Korean and foreign visitors as one.

Various events will be staged, including a large-scale carnival-style Ungjinseong Mask Parade, for which a large number of visitors will wear Baekje Mimaji Masks as well as the masks of many other countries from around the world; Nationwide Creative Mimaji Mask Dance Competition; Courtyard Performance ‘Mask of Baekje’; Mimaji Mask Drawing Competition; Performance of Baekje Mimaji Mask Dances; and an Exhibition of 200 pieces of masks contributed from ten member countries.

World Historical Cities Exhibition

Visitors will have chance to experience the history and culture of 20 member cities of the League of World Historical Cities. The exhibits will be displayed by its characteristics.

Digital pavilion of Baekje Heritages

Visitors will enjoy the digitally-restored Sabisung Palace, Jeongnimsa Temple Site, and Gomanaru Ferry Site, as well as enjoying the background sounds of mysterious Baekje Music played by the five musicians engraved on the Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner which is restored in digital form.

Special Exhibition of Baekje Relics

Visitors will experience exhibits which attest to the splendid historic and cultural heritage of Great Baekje.

Performance of Foreign Art Troupes

Twenty performance teams from the World’s Historic Cities, cultural exchange partners of Baekje in the past, and the sister cities of Gongju City and Buyeo County will stage representative cultural art performances of each participating city.

Traditional Performance of Baekje Culture

The Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival of Songpa-gu of Seoul, and the major programs of the Wangin Culture Festival of Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do, will demonstrate the high level of Baekje culture throughout the Chungnam region.

Sound Source Concert of Baekje

It is a travel through the time of Great Baekje which thrived thousand years ago, searching for the relics of Baekje. Visitors can enjoy the mysterious sounds of Baekje being played by the five musicians engraved on the restored Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner.
