Chungnam’s vision in the 21st century - Make the region prosperous, and improve the living qualities of the province people

Chungnam, always a comfortable province, has the beautiful environment under which good-hearted people live. Chungnam, originated from the brilliant culture of Baekje Dynasty and the spirits of loyalty and fidelity, has started to get a new shape in the 21st century. To cope with the new era, a regional comprehensive development plan has been established. This is an effort to develop historical, cutural and tourist resources; to enhance regional specialized industries; to construct new industrial complexes of a seashore type; to establish an integrated traffic and distribution system which is connected to the entire nation; and to develop advanced agricultutal, forestry, and fishery villages. What will be the future of Chungnam where everyone wants to live?
The future shapes of Chungnam will be developed by dividing the four great circles.
The northern circle incorporating Cheonan, Asan, and Dangjin will be developed as “the central district of industries and distribution”. Taking advantage of its geographical merit center of the nation, conveniently connected to every corner of Korea, it will be the base district of industries and distribution.
The Western seashore circle incorporating Boryeong, Seosan, Seocheon, Hongseong, and Taean will grow to be Mecca of maritime resort and tourism as a base district of international trade in the Yellow Sea. Seosan will be developed as a city of seashore industries and trades harmonizing with historical, cultural, maritime ecological resources. Daesan Port will be nominated as a free trade region where a resort and tourism infrastructure will be established by utilizing its culture and maritime ecological resources. In Taean, an International Convention Center and in Anmyeon-do Island a light airport will be constructed which will become an international tourist resort keeping a clean sea area.
The Baekje circle incorporating Gongju, Buyeo, Cheongyang, and Yesan will grow up as a district with traditional cultures, clean environment, and advanced green industries. In Gongju where traditions of history, culture, and education are harmonized together, cultural and tourist services will be developed additionally and an industrial complex of video, culture, and information will be constructed there. Now they are making a plan to develop a cultural and tourist industry that preserves and promotes the history and cultures of the Baekje Dynasty and activates clean agriculture.
The Geumgang River circle incorporating Nonsan, Geumsan, and Yeongi lying in the vicinity of Daejeon will take a role of the life industry and garden districts.

Chungnam Where Baekje Dynasty Made Its Culture Fully Blossomed.
Chungnam is the central section of Korea, called the gate to the Yeongnam and Honam districts in the past, borders on Gyeonggi Province in the north, Chungbuk Province in the east, Jeonbuk Province in the south, and the Western Sea in the west, National Road No. 1 connecting Seoul and Busan or Mokpo, Gyeongbu and Honam Railroads, Gyeongbu and Honam Highways, Gyeongbu and Honam Express Railroads and the Western Seashore Highway pass through the province so that it serves as an important position in transportation. In particular, as the travel time between the northern part of Chungnam and Seoul has shortened, many functions of the capital circle have been moving in it.
Chungnam belonged to the Baekje Dynasty in the period of the Three Dynasties, where Baekju culture fully blossomed for 185 years from AD 475 when the capital was moved from Hanseong (now, Seoul) to Wungjin (now, Gongju), then (AD 538) to Sabi (now, Buyeo) in AD 660 when the Dynasty ruined.
In Buyeo and Gongju, the capitals of Baekje Dynasty, many cultural assets are excavated. In Gongju, the Tomb of King Muryeong is well known for its epitaph, Magoksa Temple and Gongsanseong Castle are very famous, and in Buyeo, Jeonglimsaji, Mount Busosan Castle, Muryangsa Temple are very famous. Gongju National Museum and Buyeo National Museum possess many cultural assets of National Treasure and Treasure grades.

Tourism and Cultural Experience
Various kinds of cultural festivals such as Eunsanbyeolsin Festival in Buyeo, Bunggi Fish Festival in Hwangdo Island, Tug of War and Sangrok Cultural Festival in Dangjin, Ginseng Festival in Geumsan, Adm. Yi Suen-sin Festival in Asan, Maeheon Cultural Festival in Yesan, Heroine Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Festival in Cheonan. Eunsanbyeolsin Festival in Buyeo whose scale is very large, together with Gijisi Tug of War in Dangjin and Hansan Ramie Fabric Weaving in Seocheon have been nominated as important intangible cultural assets.
Major tourist attractions also include Mount Gyeryongsan National Park, Taean National Seashore Park, Mount Deoksan Provincial Park, and Mount Chilgapsan Provincial Park and Mount Daedunsan Provincial Park which adjoins Wanju County, Jeonbuk Province. Mount Gyeryongsan National Park, one of the candidate capitals in Choseon Dynasty, has many large Buddhist temples such as Donghaksa and Gapsa Temples.
Donghaksa Temple together with Sudeoksa Temple are very famous for training Buddhist priestesses. Famous swimming beaches include Hakampo, Manlipo, Cheonlipo, Yeonpo, and Mongsanpo located in Taean National Seashore Park. Daecheon, Muchangpo, and Chunjangdae are located on the southern seaside of Chungnam. The hot springs of Deoksan, Onyang and Dogo lie nearby, and they are called the hot spring resort region.
