Chungnam Province has put forward details of its development strategies and directions for the Daesan Port in Seosan, which will serve as the hub port for the central part of the west coast.

At the final session of ‘the Research on the Specialized Development of the Daesan Hub Port,’ the Province presented development plans for each major sector such as port facilities, the surrounding area, the transport network, the marina, the cruise service, and ways to increase cargo volumes.

Regarding port facilities, the goal is to develop an advanced port focused on ocean transportation and logistics. To that end, the port plans to invigorate the existing port function by attracting increased cargo from nearby petroleum and chemical companies while seeking to strengthen its commercial port functions through the expansion of its dock facilities following increases in its cargo volumes from the entire Chungcheong area.

To improve the transportation infrastructure leading to Daesan Port, the Province will expand both road and railroad networks. Concerning marina services, the operations of nearby Samgilpo Marina will be enhanced in the short term while promoting the population’s increased marine leisure activities based on the area’s outstanding conditions such as natural environment, water depth, and easy accessibility in the long term.

Concerning ways to increase cargo volumes, the Province will focus on the following: (1) increases in the cargo volumes from petroleum and chemical companies in Daesan Port, (2) increases in sea routes by attracting more shipping companies, (3) improvements in the incentive system, (4) establishment and operations of a public-private counseling organization, (5) increases in cargo volumes from the Chungcheong area through corporate marketing.
