The total area of Chungnam is 8,598km©÷, or 8.6% of the entire country.
The population has been increasing and now stands at 1,930,000 due to the drastic economic development in the west coastal area since 1996, which had been declined after the separation of Daejeon City in 1989.

.. Climate and Rainfall

Chungnam has a temperate climate with four distinctive seasons. The yearly average temperature is 12.8 degrees Celsius and the annual average precipitation totals 1,577.5mm. Since the rainfall from June through September accounts for more than 70% of the total annual precipitation, the weather is clear for most of the year. The autumn skies particularly are noted for being clear and blue.
..
.. Nature

Chungnam province is mostly low and flat. There is no place over 1,000m above sea level. With an average elevation of 100m, it¡¯s the lowest province nationwide.

The mountains in Chungnam include the Charyeongsanmaek Mountain Range which passes through the center of the province, the Gaya mountains in thenorthwest, the Gyeryong mountains in the southeast, and the Noryeong mountains (Geumsan plateau) in the southeast.

Geumgang River originates in Jangsu, Jeonbuk, flows to the north and changes its direction to the southwest after joining Mihocheon Stream at Yeongi. From this point, it flows mostly linearly. It changes its direction to the southwest at Ganggyeong and flows into the west sea. In the Geumgang River area in the south of the Charyeongsanmaek Mountain Range, wide open fields such as Guryong Plains and Nonsan Plains are observed.

Sapgyocheon Stream originates from the Charyeongsanmaek Mountain Range and flows into the north. The wide Yedang Plains are observed there.

Land reclamation has been promoted atthe seashore. Since the late 1970¡¯s, especially, the project became larger. That¡¯s why the coast line was simplified The large-scale tide embankments which simplified the coastline include Asan Bay Sea Wall, Gapgyo Sea Wall, Daeho Sea Wall, and Seosan A.B District Sea Wall. Therefore, many beaches such as Mallipo Beach, Yeonpo Beach, Mongsanpo Beach, Daecheon Beach, and Muchangpo Beach have been developed due to the presence of sand dunes.
